My shoulder is feeling weak/tender. Why? What should I do?

Dear Beth,

I’ve been surfing about 6 years with no injuries until recently. Iused to surf a couple of times a week, but since last summer I’ve uppedthat to almost everyday. That’s when I started to notice my right arm(the strong one) going weak. I don’t notice it so much when paddlinginto a wave, but when I go to paddle back out, especially when I’mpaddling hard to avoid taking a wave on the head, I feel my right armgoing “gimpy” on me- like it has no strength. I have also noticed thatit goes numb sometimes when I’m just sitting around or when sleeping.Otherwise I don’t really feel any pain. There seems to be a littletenderness (inflammation) in the deltoid and on the top of my shoulder, but I only detect this when my body worker really works it.

What’s your take? Should I be more worried? Should I see a doc?

Thanks,

Lisa
