This year's contest was held in solid head high surf at HMB State Beach, which is infamous for it's powerful closeout sections and vicious backwash. And this day was no exception. A pulsing south swell combined with a raw westerly wind swell made for consistent, but tricky surf. The high level of surfing actually made the waves look really fun.

There was some stiff competition this year as some of Half Moon Bay, San Francisco, Pacifica, and Santa Cruz' contest regulars made their way through many very close heats. Shane Desmond of Santa Cruz, who recently won the Billabong XXL Contest for biggest paddle-in wave of 2004/2005, proved that he's still a stand out in the small stuff. Shane won both the Men's Open and Master's divisions, which saw the heaviest competition this year. Some spectators complained that Shane's florescent yellow airbrush on his board was blinding them. But, luckily for Shane, the judges were all wearing tinted sunglasses.

Following in his father's footsteps, Colin Dwyer of Pacifica, is making his presence known on the local contest circuit. Colin took home the first place trophy in Boy's, and he placed 4th amongst his elders in Junior's. Watch out for this kid.

Jim Tjogas, Jr., that goofy footed ripper on the red & white boards, showed that a soon-to-be father of three can still school the little kiddies and the granddaddies, alike. Jim made the finals in both Men's Open and Longboarding. And Jim hadn't even ridden a longboard for months prior to the event!
