Surf Movies in San Francisco on Wednesday/Thursday, July 6th & 7th, 2005
Aqua & Wavefest are proud to present: Mini-Wavefest at the Red Vic! Check out some classic films and epic local footage.
Night #1 Weds, July 6th
"Bali High" - A film by Stephen Spaulding Filmed through the 70’s and released in (1981). This is my all time favorite surfing film, and even better Steve Spaulding himself is coming up with a custom edit to present- See Jim Banks, Peter McCabe, Tommy Carroll, Larry Blair, and more- scoring epic empty waves in the exotic frontiers of Java, Bali, and the mysterious “Isle of Kong”. As a special treat for the showing Steve will edit in some of his Northern California footage. Not to be missed!
Showing with short film:
An excerpt from "Natural Art" - A film by Fred Windish (1971) Think you're a hardcore local? Guess what, many people were surfing SF probably before you (or I) were born. Come see a small slice of a locally made "hard to find" surf film from an era where leashes weren't heard of, wetsuits had beavertails, and the music was thumping. Also, meet a couple of surfers that are working with that old footage, and creating a new surf film!
Night #2 Thurs, July 7th
"Style Masters" - A film by Greg Weaver and Spyder Wills, that was re-discovered, re-edited, and re-mastered in all its “All Killer/No Filler” glory. What can you say about Style Masters? It is seriously action-packed surfing, featuring nutty sequences with legends such as Lopez, Buttons, PT, Dane, Rory, Ho, and many others. You want to learn the evolution of soul surfing- I mean performance surfing in the 70s? You've got to see this film. Epic Pipeline, fun V-Land, and tons of other footage (mixed with HILARIOUS narration) make this film one of my all-time favorites!
Showing with short film:
"The Biscuit" - A film by Mike Vaughn and Blakestah
You know all those epic days you have in the water, when you think,
"Man, no one would believe SF got this good," as you drop into a 12' bomb? Guess what, a couple guys *were* filming. Come check out The Biscuit, and see if your drops made it into the film.
And of course a few bonus shorts will be thrown in the program.
