| 7th Annual Kahuna Kupuna Classic Surf Contest Fundraiser in Pacifica on Saturday, July 8, 2006 The 7th Annual Surfing for Life Kahuna Kupuna Classic (KKC) surf contest will take place on Saturday, July 8, 2006 at Linda Mar Beach in Pacifica from 7 A.M. to 6 P.M. The KKC continues to be the only amateur surf contest in the world specifically designed for longboard and shortboard surfers 30 years of age and over. Kahuna, in Hawaiian, means Big Chief, and Kupuna means Grandparent or older member of the community who everyone turns to for advice and counsel. As in past years, the main focus of the contest will be the Kahuna Kupuna division, which is set up in five-year increments for men and women surfers 30 years of age and over, with separate sub-divisions for shortboard and longboard surfers. The Kahuna Kupuna sub-divisions are as follows (Age Range and Division Names): As a way to celebrate the intergenerational nature of surfing and open the contest up to surfers under 30, while remaining true to the spirit of this annual event, an Intergenerational Team Division will be added for the first time. Each team will need to represent 3 generations with a minimum of 18 and 36 years of age difference—respectively—between at least 3 members of each team. The teams can be comprised of up to 6 members, must include at least one surfer under the age of 18, can be comprised of both male and female members and include shortboards, longboards, and/or boogie boards. Team members do NOT have to be related to each other. Each team will surf in their own heat with the scores of each team determining the winner. The deadline to enter the Kahuna Kupuna is Saturday, July 1, 2006. A limited number of beach entries may be available, depending on the number of advance entries received, but no guarantees. For surfers 30 years of age and over, the entry fee is $80 and is good for participation in the 5-year divisions in either shortboard or longboard or both, as well as in the Intergenerational Team Division. For surfers under 30 years of age who surf on an Intergenerational Team, the entry fee is just $20. All contestants are invited—at no extra charge—to the post-contest festivities at the Pedro Point Fire House. Admission at the Fire House for non-contestants who RSVP in advance is $20 and includes a reception, a buffet dinner, and the awards ceremony. This entirely volunteer-run and coordinated surf contest is a fundraiser for the non-profit Pacifica Environmental Family’s Pacifica Beach Coalition summertime beach clean-up program, as well as for the San Mateo County chapter of the Surfrider Foundation. This is a very relaxed and family-oriented event that brings people back year after year. Among the awards planned for this year, special recognition will be given to the oldest and youngest contestants in the contest. More information and entry forms are available at Pacifica surf shops, or from Roy Earnest at 650-438-6378 or kahunakupuna@comcast.net. (6/21/06)
