| Surf Movie Madness III features the fine documentary film Chasing the Lotus: The Lost Reels of Weaver and Wills. The screening will take place on Wed., Aug. 15th at the new 54,000 sq. ft. Sports Basement Potrero Hill store, housed in the former Hamm's Brewery, at 1590 Bryant St., between 15th and 16th Streets. From 6:00-8:00 P. M., shop Sports Basement before the movie and get 15% off everything while you listen to the live music of The Lava Rats and check out other sponsor booths for this event. At 8:15 P. M., the movie screenings begin with Carve, a 12-minute documentary on SF shaper Danny Hess and his eco-friendly line of boards (check out the new The Surfers Journal (Vol. 16, No. 4) cover photo of Dan Malloy on a Hess board at Rincon). Then watch Chasing the Lotus, a film narrated by Jeff Bridges (a surfer himself, aka The Dude), it is a documentary that examines the evolution of surf culture and surf discovery, as captured over the last 40 years by pivotal underground filmmakers, Greg Weaver and Spyder Wills. See legends like Corky Carroll in Newport in 1965, Gerry Lopez discovering Bali for the first time, and never-before-seen Z Boys footage as Dogtown's Stacy Peralta tells where radical surfing really started. Director Gregory Schell and producer Chris Bell will be on hand for an after-screening Q&A. Oh yeah, there will also be free beer, beverages, and light munchies. Sports Basement admission is free and the movie will cost you $10, but is free if you buy $20 or more at the store before the show and show your receipt.
