| According to a San Francisco Chronicle report, about 2.7 million gallons of partially treated sewage overflowed from a Marin sewage treatment facility into San Francisco Bay on Thursday night, January 31st. An alert system at the facility failed to properly inform the workers of the overflow. Nearby city and county officials were not notified of the spill until late Friday morning. Media was not notified until 20 hours after the spill. Warning signs were posted on a number of local bay beaches. However, SF city officials state that the water should be safe for swimming at SF beaches and the signs will be posted as a precaution through the weekend. SurfPulse also warns local ocean users that recent storm activity can create unsafe bacteria levels in the water, due to water runoff into the sea. More SurfPulse News (2/1/08)
