The closing of a beach for 5 days is all due to the usual amount of time a GW shark will stay in the area looking for food.....if no other shark sightings in the area then you will be free to go back in and surf the 2 foot mush.

Thanks to the Marine Mammal Center who cut the heads off of dead seals and leave the carcus for the sharks. Nice going!

wow. researchers cutting the heads off seals and sharks? what kind of research is that?

"this week on the shark channel, marklin perkins will cut the heads off sharks and seals to see just how much they weigh on average. this important research will save millions of lives and let us truly uncover the mysteries of the ocean.... "

wise up, dead sea lions are all over the place right now, one researcher decap'ing one washup is no big deal.

where i live there are 5+ rotting on a 1 mile stretch. we're still surfing. we're still all in one piece.

How exactly do you close a beach? I mean so the beach is closed. Is there giant sticky tape across the whole thing to catch people who try to access it? Is it a small driveway blocked with a metal bar you can jump over and duck under? If I decide I want to go walk on the beach and let my feet get wet by the surf what's stopping me? Does some shlep that works for the park service just sit there in a jeep on the beach for five days with his lights on warning people with his bullhorn if they get close? I agree with the other commenters. The idea that the park people have the arrival and departure times for the sharks is pretty amusing.

Poor sharky, Il bet he gets it hard to bite people with his head missing. But on a serious note it is a scientist that cuts the head off dead seals that show up along the coast in the name of research. I have seen them at OB and in pacifica.
