By the description it's clearly an elephant seal and they are highly territorially. I have surfed lagoonas and more than once I have had one swim right up and pop its head out of the water to see what is sitting out front of their beach. Scares the shit out of you because theyre not small either can be 13-14ft and a couple thousand lbs. Wasn’t a shark.
