Great Highway is closed in both directions from Lincoln to Sloat due to the hazards created by the recent series of storms. In addition—the really bad news—is that both southbound lanes from Sloat to Skyline Blvd. are closed until summer, according to the Department of Public Works.
The storms battered the bluff supporting the parking lot and road, eroding tons of rock, dirt, and sand, and portions of the lot are now hanging without much support. As I took these photos, I saw multiple sand slides under the pavement that is the south exit drive from the lot–no doubt, totally unsafe, maybe even for walking.
The northbound lanes between Skyline and Sloat are CURRENTLY CLOSED (in conflict with today’s press release from the city), but are expected to remain open. You can reckon that the Sloat parking lot will also be closed for a few months.
The emergency and long-term stabilization plans for the road and lot may have an effect on surfing conditions at Sloat—stay informed by checking with DPW website and SF Surfrider chapter as they gather more information.

Great job guys. Anyone got a visual on the normally buried outflow pipe by the start of the first lot?
The undercutting at the south exit of first lot was to the middle of the roadbed by noon. A good 10 to 15 foot North/South stretch of the exit lane is undercut and sagging. Glad to see DPW so quick on the ball.
DPW is working with the NPS and the Army Corp of Engineers (COE) on a long-range plan to appropriately respond to the continuing beach erosion impacts at Ocean Beach. The COE and DPW are acting on shoreline stabilization studies and technical reports that have been produced over the last several years to stabilize the beach and protect the road. The City, NPS and the COE are evaluating using sand from several nearby sources, including Ocean Beach and the San Francisco Ship Channel, to provide protection from large winter storms.
Nice on-the-spot reporting Matt, good one.
Can’t they just strengthen the cliff and pave towards the middle of the road (there’s plenty of room). Or how about North bound traffic having the two lanes – and put an improved parking area and much needed bathrooms instead of south bound lanes.
Eventually the Zoo is going to be beach front. Never should have put riprap in there from the start. Nature always wins.
not a bad idea, Besyri, turning the two NB lanes into one NB and one SB until the fix is done. it’s not like those lanes get tons of traffic. right now, with both NB lanes closed as well, the traffic is piling up on Skyline trying to turn left at Sloat.
what ever happened to the ocean beach vision council? not even the mayor’s office has any idea what they’ve been working on since march of ’08. shouldn’t this have been or could be a pretty important topic? If your interested, these are the folks supposedly on the case: Assemblywoman Fiona Ma, Supervisors Carmen Chu and Jake McGoldrick, Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA) Superintendent Brian O’Neill, Jared Blumenfeld of the Department of the Environment, Scott Preston of the environment-based planning and design firm EDAW, Clark Manus of Heller Manus Architects, Jean Rogers of ARUP, Lara Truppelli of Beach Chalet Brewery and Restaurant, and Gabriel Metcalf of the San Francisco Planning and Urban Research Association.
Here we go with the “Surferʻs Rights” deal. Me, I have my personal MeyerassenDooffer and the black Audi is stacked with about seven of them for my probrohoeastcoastmidwest tranny friends to try.

Hey Ben Garcia: Go boy, go!
Artificial Reef!!!
Make OB a true world class spot, have pro contests, bring money to the city
…and no more erosion
@Ben Garcia, et al. Laura Trupelli from the OBVC is organizing an emergency town hall meeting. Here’s the info:

We should shore up the road with funboards.
Let it fall into the sea where it belongs. Standing there against nature waving your ʻI did somethingʻ flag
for everyone to see. This is your beach now. I give it to you. Middle Beach – the new Sloat.
I don’t know what everyone’s so worked up about. The outer bars have been breaking for weeks, and I always launch my Jet Ski from Crissy Field — from there it’s smooth sailing to Outside Taraval (with the exception of a quick tour through the Fort to high five a few of my bros on the way out.)
The Sloat parking lot is strictly for “stoked” posers. Real Ocean Beach surfers hit the insane rebar reefs of SF Dump where you can get, like, so pitted, it’s sick.
Ohhh yeah thank you for this fantasti post , I would love to get more and more tranny posts like this one ! Thank you
