NERT (Neighborhood Emergency Response Teams) Training in SF on Sundays, February 13 & 20, 2010

A 7.0 earthquake hits, causing widespread damage to San Francisco. Perhaps a tsunami follows causing more destruction. With professional emergency personnel committed to the entire Bay Area, or unable to commute from their residences to San Francisco, who can fill in to help? YOU CAN!

After a disaster, local people have often been able to save lives before any government entity can get to them. The San Francisco Fire Department realized that after the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, and has organized Neighborhood Emergency Response Teams (NERT), so that we can be better prepared to do just that when the next big one hits. NERT volunteers learn how to prepare their own homes, what to have on hand, what to do first (and second, and third…) when a disaster occurs, how to coordinate their efforts, and many other skills.

But NERT is badly underrepresented in the western parts of the city. And we are far away from where city and other government personnel and equipment are located, so we especially need to be prepared.  Now there is an opportunity to become part of this effort, by enrolling in training sessions that will take place in February.

A two-day intensive session will take place Saturday, February 13, AND Saturday, February 20, from 8:30 to 5:30, at the L’Chaim Senior Center at 2534 Judah Street (between 30th and 31st Avenues, on the north side of the street).  Any city resident can enroll, but residents of the Richmond and Sunset districts are particularly encouraged to sign up.

HOW TO SIGN UP: Either visit http://www.sf-fire.org/index.aspx?page=865 and fill out the form

or call NERT at 415-970-2024.
