As part of the annual SFOFF, this year features a night dedicated to surf films.
The San Francisco Ocean Film Festival debuts its first surf program this Friday (2/5) at 7:00 PM showcasing three independent surf films including the multi-award-winning “Sea of Darkness,” an Indonesian adventure tale recounting the beginnings of Martin Daly’s legendary surf charter, the Indies Trader, and the multinational surf company, Quiksilver. Trailer here and interview here. “Sea of Darkness” was produced, written, and directed by Cape Town native Michael Oblowitz, who is known for directing Steven Segal films Out for a Kill and The Foreigner, as well as shooting early music videos and commercials for David Bowie, Eric Clapton, and Santana. Q&A with directors will follow each film and may extend to a local pub if the audience can’t get enough of Oblowitz’s colorful stories. All festival films will be shown at Pier 39’s Theater.
Two shorts including Patrick Trefz’s “Bicycle Trip” will precede the feature and San Franpsycho will be on-hand to sell their locally-designed tees with part of the proceeds going to the festival. They will also be tossing out hand-printed tees between films so arrive early for a good seat.
Program tickets are $12. The surf program will sell out due to theater size and interest. Visit http://www.acteva.com/booking.cfm?bevaID=194758 to purchase tickets and http://oceanfilmfest.org/ for the full Festival lineup.
To make a day of it, or if the 7:00 pM show is sold out, buy a ticket for the Fri 1:00 PM show featuring four great films, including the documentary “Shaping A Life” about big wave surfer-shaper, Gary Linden. Gary will be present for the Q&A if the Todos contest is not called.
