A crew of about 100 people moved out on the sea wall at HMB early today to get a vantage point to watch the 2010 Mavericks contest. Unfortunately a large set came through and swept the wall clean. It sounds like it was pretty hairy as ABC is reporting broken bones and such.
“Nobody was swept away into the water. They were just swept onto the beach area pretty hard,” Jalbert said. “It’s pretty rocky. We’ve cleared the beach area so this doesn’t happen again.”

Great job Surfpulse Tweeters! Really enjoyed keeping tabs on the contest and the day’s events through your ears and eyes. Good on ya!
Thanks MJ, glad to be of service! Surreal event, insane conditions.
Yippie Doodles surf tweeters – way to hold the camera steady. Classic!
Save Sloat!
Just as I was wondering why I spent $25 to watch at Willie Mays Park, I saw the Rouge Wave hit on the jumbotron, and thought “Oh, yeah, because I know what that beach is like!”
You couldn’t tell how bad it was at first.
Too bad people were hurt though
Does anybody else think it’s funny that the picture above is of the Jetty?
Funny ha ha or funny funny?
Okay so now after all these years people might understand why they’ve always been told not to go there to watch the contest.
They came to see the powerful ocean show and ended up on stage.
I’m a local surfer and frequently view Mavericks and surf Ross’ Cove. I am really disappointed with the Mavericks Contest committee. First they completely blew the ’08-’09 season, then they pushed out the venerable Jeff Clark, then they almost blew the ’09-’10 season (the waves were much better in late November), and now they contributed to the injuries of contest spectators by failing to secure the area (in the video it appears that at least one of the injuries was due to impact with unsecured equipment, which is inexcusable). I think it would be best to return the management of the contest back to Jeff Clark because the last two years have been an utter disaster and an embarrassment to the local surf community.
