Too bad “The Surf Shop” show of Japanese surf art didn’t open in time for the Kaiwo Maru port of call last week (had to be some surfers among those cadets), but this looks like a very cool show.

Don’t miss the *opening*free* reception party* for “The Surf Shop” a new exhibit featuring Japanese surf art ranging from surfboards to photography and film by 17 surf-inspired Japanese artists and pioneering surf entrepreneurs.  Held at Japantown’s Superfrog Gallery, a new project at NEW PEOPLE (a new space whose 4 floors showcase what’s hot in Tokyo, namely Japanese retail, arts and cinema), the art show runs Saturday, May 15 through June 13 before heading to Tokyo. Surf Film Doubleheader at Viz Cinema:

A vibrant, award-winning documentary narrated by Beau Bridges, it profiles ten legendary surfers including Rabbit Kekai, Fred Van Dyke, Woody Brown and LeRoy Grannis, who model healthy aging by staying active and engaged into their 7th, 8th and 9th decades.

“The Surf Shop” Short Films

At 12:00 PM, “THE SURF SHOP” art opening celebration continues with  VIZ Cinema’s film shorts.

MONSTER WAVE IN CAPE ASHIZURI (2009, 25min, Digital, English Subtitles)
A monster lives off the shore of Cape Ashizuri of Kochi, Japan. This short documentary film captures career surfers challenging the legendary monster waves.
KOKORO (Directed by Keiichiro Mukai, 2010, 30min, Digital, English Subtitles)
Through the stunning sound and visuals of this short film, Director Keiichiro Mukai sends his wish to the next generation: co-existence with nature. A heart-felt piece.
GLACIER DIARY (Directed by Takatoshi Okura, 2010, 30min, Digital, English Subtitles)
Although not quite a surfing film, GLACIER DIARY uses similar filming techniques used to capture waves. As part of THE SURF SHOP exhibition, filmmaker Takatoshi Okura tells a story of a worldly glacier photographers’ challenge and triumph in Patagonia.
