If you’ve been waiting for Grain Surfboards to come to your neighborhood so you don’t have to miss the waves at your local, you could be in luck… if you live in San Francisco that is. Two instructors from our crew are coming to the city by the bay to pull off a full seven-day board building class in an old firehouse that’s easy to get to by streetcar.
We’re still arranging the details, but you can count on the same experience you’d get by coming here to Maine including two incredible meals a day, the full course of instruction, and a board ready-to-glass. The tuition’s a bit more to cover the cost of us getting there, but students living in the area avoid the cost of traveling to Maine and cost of lodging, so we expect everyone to come out way ahead. Stay tuned to this page for more information as we have it.

Killer, please keep us updated with sign up info, price, and all the other happy details. I’m in.
Hey sharkbait, click on the link for “Grain Surfboards” at end of post. That will take you to the details of the workshop. Good luck!
Will it be at the beach, or some other trendy spot?
Hey All – SF Surfrider was the driving force to bring the boys from GRAIN Surfboards here to give a class. We are stoked to help host them as a way to promote more “eco-friendly” surfboard options, and we found a really great place to hold the class in the Ocean View neighborhood (very Southwest corner of the city). Class is being held in an cool old wooden Firehouse (so old, that it has a hay loft for the horses) and it even has Muni train service that can drop you off 100 ft from the Firehouse. Class is a week long, includes meals, and you get to make whatever style of board (long, short, fish, other) you want from the GRAIN lineup. It’s on the pricy side ($1850-ish) as far as a typical surfboard goes, but the board’s not typical, and you are really paying for a week of personal instruction (2 teachers & only 6 class participants) on how to build a wooden surfboard from expert craftsman. Sign up now at the GRain website (http://www.grainsurfboards.com/classes/travel/) if you are serious, cause I think there are only 2 spots left!
I hear you there Michael, “instruction” can get very pricey. I am an advanced surfer from the north and south. I recently chopped down a bitchenʻ Cherry tree – the wood has grains from ancient times. I am selling 8ʻx3ʻ lengths for 800.00 each and I can hook you up with the latest most popular roots surfboard “designer” as well. My website and shameless plug:

Thanks BVB – as always, you seem to have your finger on the pulse of hipsters who really just want to have something to put their coffee table books on. Good luck with the new biz; I hear sarcasm is getting harder to sell for some reason. Now Irony (which by definition needs to have just a touch of humor) on the other hand is selling like hot cakes, so you might want to check that out if you and G. Washington have any time left over after chopping down them ancient, 3 foot wide cherry trees.
Ps. no need for any hate mail back, was just killing a few minutes with nearly worthless commentary
A cynic sees the world as it is not as it should be. I have been riding a short carbon fiber bat winged 4 finner – 6-2″x 3″ thick, my shortest fattest board ever; I know, itʻs different from wood and rides better.
Ahh yes, the ever subjective word “better”. Sorry, didn’t realize that there was consensus on what boards we should all be riding; i thought surfers were individuals who could decide for themselves based on how they liked to surf (or maybe even the conditions that day?). My bad; so can you send me your sweet battail to copy? I sure wouldn’t want to be out of conformity
*Besides, what kind of a lame ass surfer ever enjoyed riding a wood-based board anyways? I heard that Tom Blake guy was just a poser…
