A thick layer of fog is hanging out just past the first line of white water, adding mystery to an otherwise typical winter morning which includes light-to-non-existent offshore winds, NW swell in the water, and somewhat chilly temps. The sun is supposed to come out and burn off the fog. And what will we find behind that grey mystery curtain? Likely, some overhead surf and clean conditions. Enjoy!

Checked in on the beach during a break in the rain to see sideshore/offshore winds pelting some classic storm surf. It’s not huge storm surf, but it’s definitely storm surf. The wind makes for some fun mind-surfing, and the waves are holding up enough to make it look like it might actually be worth getting in the water. But on the whole, it’s probably not a great day for waves. The rain fell pretty hard last night, and the waves are chopped up and hard to track down, so it’ll probably be a frustrating session in dirty water. But who knows, you might score all by yourself while everyone else sits it out.

A close to full tide and smooth seas are letting some of our fading swell work through. Chest to shoulder high waves breaking on the outer bar, with a few pushing all the way through and reforming on the inside. Looks like another fun surf day. More swell on the way! Once again greeting us on this fine morning are sunny blue skies, a nice breeze blowing out of the east over a relatively smooth ocean with waves in the 1.5 to double overhead or so range. Conditions are looking fairly stacked up with close interval sets creating a nice turning bowl of wet concrete on the inside with fast, sectioned waves greeting you upon your arrival to the outside. Overall, it’s rideable, the paddle looks long with a definite right time, right place type of conditions happening out there.

The start of the day brings us beautiful weather with sunny, blue skies, just a hint of a breeze out of my favorite east direction, blowing over a nice smooth ocean. Unfortunately though, conditions are not quit there yet with waves in the 1.5 to double overhead or so range, a rough looking paddle with fast, top to bottom waves waiting for you at the end of your long journey. There are some beautiful waves out there hidden away, however tracking one down and being in the right spot looks like a bit of a challenge at the moment. Overall, it’s rideable in an Ocean Beach solid overhead, punishing sort of way.

Perhaps, instead of looking for his shadow, Punxsutawney Phil simply peeked at the Central Coast surf forecast for the foreseeable future to determine there would be six more weeks of winter. Let’s hope he’s right! Meanwhile, looking a bit smaller than expected this morning—could be due to the full tide. Regardless, shape looks decent with waves breaking in the chest to shoulder high range. Less tide helps and the size is likely on the increase today as well. Overall, looks like a good surf day to start a solid surf weekend.

It’s solid head-and-a-half this morning with several lines of whitewater to fight through, organized but chunky from tide. Winds are very light from the east and the sun is slowly burning through thin fog covering the length of beach. The paddle is not worth it yet as, even if you were in the right spot, it’s burgering or fading away. Keep an eye on it though as the tide continues to drain.

Looking bigger, but not so organized this morning. The fog and mist, along with a whole lot of whitewater are making things look uninviting and it is hard to get an accurate read on things. Still, there is head high plus surf with pretty clean conditions. Noon-time low tide could be the call as things continue to build, but for now, paddling out looks like a somewhat unpleasant experience.

All the ingredients are in place. Light offshore winds, head high swell, falling tide. On paper, the surf should be really fun. But something is off. Maybe it’s the bars, or the direction, or something, but it’s just not really happening out there this morning. It’s barely tickling the out bars, and then shutting down as close-outs on the inner bars. There are some occasional waves that look makeable, but on the whole it’s a disappointing morning out there.

Things are starting slow this morning at Ocean Beach. Looks somewhat similar to yesterday morning, maybe a little smaller. Thigh to chest high waves breaking over a smooth, glassy ocean. Like yesterday, there look to be some mellow, playful little peelers if you are so inclined. Winds are forecast to turn SW in the afternoon. Low tide at 10:31. Things will pick up this week with some more NW energy, so today is a good day to give that longboard or fish some love before you gotta put it away for awhile.
