A Good Samaritan thought something fishy going on, seeing a dude trying to sell a Taylor shortboard for $10 at the 24th Street BART Station in SF. Blue Whale Washes Ashore in Mendocino County on Monday, October 19, 2009

A rare instance of a blue whale washing ashore has occurred in Fort Bragg in Mendocino County. The blue whale appears to have been struck by a ship. Details at SFGate.com. Board Stolen in San Francisco around October 2, 2009

A regular in the line-up at OB had his board stolen from his garage in Outer Sunset district sometime between Thurs. evening, Oct. 1 and Sat. morning, Oct. 3.

Details:
6′-1″ Sol-life round-tail, 18-1/4″ x 2-1/4″.
It has blue airbrushed lines going halfway up the board starting at the tail, towards the nose.

Surfboard Lost/Stolen (?) at Ocean Beach on Friday, April 17, 2009

A local surfer had his board lost or stolen (mistakenly picked up, we’d like to think) at Ocean Beach on Fri., April 17 at 1:00 PM.

Details: 6′6″ Andreini tri-fin, olive green and tan with a picture of a cartoon penguin in a hat Chilly Willy on the front. Lost just south of Kelly’s Please contact SurfPulse if you find find or spot the board and we will contact the owner.

Car Burglaries at Ocean Beach the Week of September 23, 2007

On Sun., Sept. 23rd, between 3:00 and 5:00 P.M. while the vehicle owner was surfing at VFW’s across from the Beach Chalet, a late model Toyota pickup truck was broken into by means of forced entry, most likely a screwdriver. The thief stole the victim’s pants, wallet, wedding ring, cell phone, cash, and credit cards. The credit cards were ran up immediately with charges made at restaurants and the Daly City BART station.

On Mon., Sept. 24th, between 3:00 and 4:30 P.M. while the vehicle owner was surfing near Sloat Blvd., a vehicle was broken into, also by means of forced entry and again most likely a screwdriver. The vehicle was parked between the two parking lots at the south end of OB. Clothes, cell phone, and cash were all stolen.

SurfPulse has been receiving semi-regular reports of this forced entry type of car burglary, besides the more amenable “Hide-a-Key” thieves. These forced entry burglaries seem to be occurring in the late afternoon. For your sake, do not store valuables in your car while surfing and carry your key with you instead of hiding it on the car.

Please report vehicle burglaries to the SFPD.

Car Break-ins at Ocean Beach on Friday, August 31, 2007

On Fri., Aug. 31st, between 4:30 and 5:30 P. M., at the southern end of the Sloat Blvd. parking lot, one surfer’s truck was broken into by a screwdriver through the driver’s door lock, and on another truck a break-in was attempted by the same method.

If you have any information about these break-ins, please contact the SFPD. Keep an eye out this holiday weekend for this kind of activity and please call the police if you witness a theft in progress. And, a reminder not to stash your key on your car–the Hide-a-Key Thieves may be watching!

Car Burglary at Ocean Beach on Saturday, July 28, 2007

Another car burglary happened at Ocean Beach (San Francisco) while the car’s owner was out in the water. The incident occurred on Sat., July 28th between 9:30 and 10:30 A. M. in the parking lot across the street from the Beach Chalet.

This burglary was yet another incidence of the “Hide-A-Key” thieves spying on surfers suiting up, and noting if and where the car key is “hidden” by the car owner. In this case, the thieves drove the car to the very end of the parking lot and abandoned it there with the keys on the floor, but had stolen the owner’s phone and spare change from the front of the car and cash from his wallet located in the trunk. All other belongings, including clothes and board bag were conscientiously left alone by the thieves.

DO NOT “HIDE” YOUR KEY ON YOUR CAR WHILE YOU SURF! CARRY THE KEY WITH YOU!

Surfer Assaulted at Ocean Beach Parking Lot in San Francisco on Sunday, March 11, 2007

An Ocean Beach regular was assaulted at Ocean Beach on Sun., March 11 at approximately 5:30 P.M. The surfer’s account of the incident is below. If you were a witness to this incident, or have any information about it, please contact the San Francisco Police Department (or SurfPulse to forward the information to the SFPD):

“I was walking home from surfing this afternoon (Sunday, March 11), at around 5:30 P.M. I was on the paved walkway above the beach parking lot at the end of Balboa, between stairwells 3 and 4, when out of nowhere some drunken jerk punches me in the side of the head. It was totally unprovoked, I didn’t even see it coming—I’m just walking home in my wetsuit with my surfboard under my arm, and the next thing I know, I’m on the ground getting punched. I chipped a tooth, have some scratches on my face, my nose is swollen and still bleeding a little (four hours later). I basically just wrestled free, and got the hell out of there. Some guy came up to me and gave me back my surfboard. Then another guy came up with a cell phone and asked if I wanted to call the cops. I said “Yeah!”. As he started to dial, the guy who hit me and one of his friends ran up to us and threatened us if we called the cops. At that point, I just turned and walked up to the Wise clothing store on the corner of Balboa and La Playa. I asked the girl at the counter to call the cops and asked if I could wash my face off in their bathroom. After I was cleaned up, I walked back to the beach, and evidently some witnesses had already called 911. There was a Park Ranger cruiser in the parking lot and I walked up to him and told him what had happened. We walked back to where I had been assaulted, but by that time, the guys who did it had already left. From witness accounts, there were basically two males and one female. After assaulting me, the female started shouting “Damien, let’s get out of here.” I guess at that point, they jumped in their red Ford Bronco and sped south onto the Great Highway.

Description of the assailants:
They were driving a red Ford Bronco, and had a large, leashed male pitbull.
Two males and one female—all wearing tank tops and shorts.

One of the males was named Damien.

I didn’t really get a good look at these guys (like I said, I didn’t even see it coming)—but I think they were Hispanic, one light skin (the one who hit me) and one dark skin (the one who threatened the guy with the cell phone). The cop wrote down that it was two Hispanic males from witness descriptions. They were drinking, and probably just looking to cause trouble.

Anyway, thought I’d pass on this information to you. I would encourage people to report drinking on the beach—mellow people having a few beers is one thing, but agro looking dudes with pitbulls getting hammered in the parking lot is another, and if the cops can clear them off the beach before they get too drunk, it could save someone else from getting sucker-punched like I did.”

More Thefts At Linda Mar, Pacifica

Several thefts have been reported at the parking lot at Linda Mar in Pacifica. Three San Francisco surfers had each of their wallets stolen while they were surfing mid morning on Friday, August 4, 2006. The thief (or thieves) found the car key hidden on the vehicle, unlocked the cabin of the truck, removed 2 wallets from the surfers’ clothing. Then, he/she/they unlocked the camper shell, and removed a third wallet from the other surfer’s clothing. Meticulously, the crook(s) locked up the camper shell and the cabin of the truck, and they placed the key in the place where they found it.

Once the surfers realized that their wallets were gone, they looked in nearby trashcans. And they found all three wallets with only cash removed. All credit cards were cancelled, in case the perpetrator(s) had copied the credit card numbers.

Upon reporting the theft to Pacifica Police Department, the latest victims were told that there had been numerous similar thefts at Linda Mar over the past month. Usually, the thefts have happened in the mornings, and the crooks get into parked cars by using keys that are hidden on the vehicles.

If you saw someone rummage through a green Toyota Tundra truck on Friday, August 4th, please contact Pacifica Police Department and send the info to SurfPulse, so we can post any information that might be helpful.

Don’t stash your key! Otherwise, you may be the next surfer to get their stuff (or car) ripped off!

Theft at Ocean Beach, SF on Tuesday, July 18, 2006

On July 18, 2006, between 10 A.M. and noon, two wallets were stolen from a car parked in the Ocean Beach lot in front of the Beach Chalet. The surfers hid the car key on top of a tire. The victims report that when they returned to their car from their surf session, the car was locked, key in the same place on the tire, but the wallets were gone. The stolen credit cards were later used in South SF about an hour later.

Another reminder, folks, to never hide your key on the car, as someone may be spying on you. Bring your key with you and keep any valuables out of sight.
