California King Tides Initiative December 22-24

Please join us for the 2nd Annual California King Tides Photo Initiative this winter. To participate, grab your camera and take photos of coastal areas flooded by high tides this December 22-24, January 20-22, and February 7-9.

“King tides” are extreme high tide events that occur when the sun and moon’s gravitational forces reinforce one another. King tides tend to be more dramatic in the winter when storms cause increased wind and wave activity along the coast. These high water events allow us to visualize now how flooding from rising sea levels could impact our beaches, coastal areas and shoreline communities in the future.

Get Involved!

1. Mark your calendars for December 22 -24, January 20 -22, and February 7 -9, when king tides are expected to occur.
2. Go to http://californiakingtides.org/when/ and view the tide schedule and find out when the highest tides will occur in your area. Take images of areas that are known to flood and erode and / or areas where the high water levels can be gauged against sea walls, jetties, bridge supports, dikes, buildings or other coastal infrastructure around the state. If possible, take comparison photos of the same area at low tide or during a normal high tide. Remember to be safe! High tides can cause hazardous waves and flooding so please keep your distance from the shoreline as you snap your photos.
3. Load photos to the California King Tides Flickr group. The higher the resolution the better! For additional details, please visit our “Share Your Pictures” web page.

Parking Fees at Linda Mar

The City of Pacifica has applied to the California Coastal Commission to implement a fee parking system for the two lots at Linda Mar Beach. The revenue from these fees will be used for facilities maintenance, to hire two rangers, and to improve snowy plover signage.

Three Wishes and Three Predictions for the Rip Curl Pro at Ocean Beach, San Francisco

There’s been a ton of chatter about what’s going to happen at the first top tier surf contest held in San Francisco in almost 20 years. I’ve heard the range of opinions, talked about it with all sorts of people (surfers and non-surfers), and put together my own list of wishes and predictions for what’s actually going to happen. Here are my top three wishes alternating with my top three predictions about how those wishes will actually play out:

Wish #1: Ocean Beach dishes out the punishment.

Let’s be honest, we all want to validate our stories about OB to our surf buddies scattered around the world. We want to see Mick Fanning get denied on the paddle out, we want to see Taj Burrows scream from a nausea inducing ice cream headache, we want to see Kelly Slater paddle for five minutes against a ripping side shore current only to have a perfect peak break right at the spot he paddled away from.

In short we want to see all the things we’ve told people about OB be inflicted on the best surfers in the world. Am I just a mean bastard, or are ya with me on this? Let’s be honest, we want the show to be OB more than the surfers.

Prediction #1: The pros will make Ocean Beach look pretty easy

In reality, the pros aren’t going to struggle much with OB. For anyone who’s seen them in the water over the past few days, you’ve probably realized pretty quickly that these guys are on a whole other level. Yeah, the paddle will probably play a role in a few heats where someone miscalculates the time it’ll take to get out. But overall, no one is going to get denied, no one is going to get skunked during their heat, and they’ll generally do things on OB waves that you never thought were possible there.

Wish #2: Kelly Slater wins his 11^th world title in San Francisco.

Like him or not it’s gonna happen at some point this season, might as well be here. I’m personally not a big fan of contest surfing in general, but I find it hard not to like Kelly Slater. If we’re going to watch contest surfing, I’d like to watch the best contest surfer ever do his thing.

Prediction #2: Kelly finishes 10^th and clinches the title at Pipe.

I don’t know, this just feels more likely. There are so many natural variables at OB that it makes it more likely that the “best” won’t win. Also, I heard an interview where Kelly said he’s never surfed OB before. What’s up with that? Think you’re just gonna stroll out there and win a contest the first time you ever surf the place?

Wish #3: The event doesn’t cause me to get any fewer waves than I normally would

I’ll admit it, I’m selfish when it comes to surf, and I don’t care that much about pro surfing. It’s taken me a while to warm to the idea of a contest at OB, and honestly, I’m still not that fired up about it. This is the bull’s-eye of our tight window for truly good surf, and blocking off a chunk of the beach for a couple days just doesn’t help my odds. Life is busy enough, last thing I need is something else reducing the odds of me scoring epic OB.

Prediction #3: It doesn’t end up disrupting my surfing that much

The contest organizers are going run the contest the first chance they get. They know OB is fickle, and they won’t risk it. Based on the surf forecast we’re going to see good conditions starting Wednesday. Since I’m almost exclusively a dawn patrol guy during the week, and heats don’t start until 9am at the earliest, I should be able to get my sessions in per usual. If that prediction holds true, then the final on Saturday will be a complete zoo.

So there it is, the contest window opens tomorrow, let’s see how it all plays out.

The Bodysurf Classic to be held in San Francisco, Ocean Beach on November 5th, 2011 at 10:00am. The specific location to be determined on the day of the event. The location will be posted here on the official event website and in the window of Trouble Coffee, 4033 Judah St (between 45th Ave & 46th Ave) San Francisco CA 94122. There will be a $15.00 entrance fee for competitors (fee will include event T-shirt). The 6 person heats will be run on a first come, first serve basis. All heats are gender and age neutral. Small non buoyant devices such as handplanes may be used but device free rides will be scored with more enthusiasm.

BODYSURF CLASSIC ≠ PROCEDURES

1. All individuals who are in good standing with The Bodysurf Classic may proceed to Ocean Beach on November 5, 2011 for beach entry and payment of a $15.00 registration fee.

2. It is local policy that unfriendly people may not enter The Bodysurf Classic. Unless they can prove upon entry that participation in The Bodysurf Classic will create a noticeable and measurable amount of joy in their lives.

3. Slots in the The Bodysurf Classic event are offered at beach entry, on a first come first serve basis until all slots are filled or there is no longer a qualified member interested in competing or the deadline has occurred.

4. The first round of heats will be run from 10:00am to 2:00pm. The top 12 highest scores from all previously run heats will proceed to the semi-finals. The 10:00am to 2:00pm time frame could be shortened due to attendance.

5. Wild card or guaranteed slots will be offered to people of gratuitous ability or contestants who arrive with exceptional snacks, provided they are also in good standing with The Bodysurf Classic.

6. The first 100 contestants will receive a free T-shirt with the payment of their $15.00 registration fee. Previously mentioned contestants or spectators with exceptional snacks or copious positive energy are also eligible for a free T-shirt.

7. The governing body which runs The Bodysurf Classic has never operated a contest or official event of any sort. Please be patient as these rules are due to change based on a variety of factors The Bodysurf Classic is probably not even aware of.

BODYSURF CLASSIC ≠ JUDGING AND SCORING

The subjective judging system will be used (0-10 points using .1 integrals) and there will be an active judging panel of one head judge and three scoring judges. The Bodysurf Classic is entitled to provide personnel for the panel. Active judging panels should attempt to represent all lifeforms, whenever possible, or a wide variety of people based on the limitations of beach culture. However, it is up to the Contest Director to approve all Judges. Judges shall have the opportunity for a break every five heats. Judges may judge as much as they like (subject to the contest directors approval) as long as they are consistent. Judges may be judging themselves, members of their family or close personal friends. See Bodysurf Classic judges handbook and judges rotation.*

The judging criteria shall be:

THE CONTESTANT WHO EXECUTES THE MOST RADICAL MANEUVERS GENERATING POWER AND SPEED THROUGH OUT IN A FUNCTIONAL MANNER IN THE MOST CRITICAL SECTIONS OF THE BIGGEST AND/OR BEST WAVE FOR THE LONGEST FUNCTIONAL DISTANCE WILL RECEIVE THE HIGHEST SCORE.

* The individual judge’s scores should be consistent with one another. If a judge is repeatedly inconsistent, he/she may be replaced. Please refer to Bodysurf Classic Judges Handbook for detailed policy, instructions and guidelines for judging.

Shark Attack in Monterey County on Saturday, October 29, 2011

“MARINA, Calif. — A surfer was attacked by a shark at Marina State Beach early Saturday, emergency crews said.The surfer, Eric Tarantino, 27, was surfing with friends at about 7:15 a.m. The friends said they saw the shark before it attacked.Tarantino was bitten on the arm and neck. Paramedics said they treated Tarantino on the beach and then took him to the marina airport. He was later flown to Regional Medical Center of San Jose.Friends said that Tarantino was in stable condition.”
