SurfPulse Team Needs Surf Reporters

Are you an experienced Ocean Beach surfer? Do you live near OB? Would you like to contribute to the longest-running (since 1999) local website focused on the San Francisco Bay Area surf community? You’d be joining an all-volunteer team that’s dedicated to serving the local surf community with daily surf reports, news and features.

SurfPulse is in need of a couple of weekday Ocean Beach surf reporters who can deliver morning reports with knowledge and accuracy, as well as an occasional dose of humor. We’re building a slightly larger pool of reporters for regular and backup coverage, but you would need to commit to one (great!) or more (even better!) regularly scheduled weekdays. You will need a digital camera or decent smartphone camera and Internet access to post your reports. You also will be committing to posting the report in a timely manner to be of use to the surf community, but not at the expense of missing the wave window for yourself.

There’s no pay, but there are the occasional guest list passes to surf-related movies, concerts, and the like. You would also have the opportunity to contribute news postings and even features if interested.

This month’s Wet Wednesday Benefit at The Riptide is to assist Save the Waves with Chile earthquake relief. Here’s the low-down from the barman up high at The Riptide:

Come celebrate April’s last Wet Wednesday at The Riptide and help support Save The Waves’ Chile relief program. Donations will directly aid small coastal areas that were hit the hardest by the February 27 earthquake and following tsunamis. Your support will help Save The Waves continue to empower and help rebuild Chile! For more information, photos and video, please visit www.savethewaves.org

Free admission, free food, surf flicks played on a big screen and soul, funk, house, breaks, reggae and Brazilian beats, courtesy of DJs Paul McNitt and Paul Hobi.

There will be a $5 raffle for a $450 gift certificate toward a custom Las Olas Surfboard www.lasolassurfboards.com, a Cutarra Surf Tour in Panama http://www.facebook.com/cutarrasurftour?ref=ts, and lots of other great raffle prizes donated by the Pizza Place on Noriega, Timbuk2, Java Beach Cafe, The Red Vic Movie House, Sunset Pet Supply, Noriega Produce and surf author Jaimal Yogis.

A percentage of the bar will be donated and all of Jeff’s share of the tips.

The Riptide hosts a Wet Wednesday (surf music, films, etc.) every week, but the last Wednesday of the month is a benefit for a local nonprofit or worthy cause. On March 31, from 8:00 PM–2:00 AM, SurfPulse and others sponsor a benefit for the Edgewood Center for Children and Families.

Please join us for a great party for a great cause. The Edgewood Center has been serving Bay Area children since the days of the Gold Rush. They provide a range of services to help children, teens and families at home, in schools, the community and in residential treatment.

Admission is free, there will be free food and DJ Paul will get your booty shaking.

Surfpulse.com will host a raffle for a $450 gift certificate from Las Olas Surfboards and there will be other great prizes from cool local businesses like Aqua Surf Shop, surf author Jaimal Yogis, Java Beach Cafe, Noriega Produce, The Pizza Place on Noriega, The Red Vic Movie House and Timbuk2.

Sierra Nevada is donating $1 for every pint of their beer sold that night, a portion of the tips will be donated and the Riptide is donating a percentage of the bar sales.

Every Wednesday is a Wet Wednesday at The Riptide (3639 Taraval @47th Ave.)! The last (usually) Wednesday of each month is a benefit for a local social service. SurfPulse is proud to be one of the sponsors of the monthly Wet Wednesday benefit, and here is the information from Bartender Jeff on the Feb. 24 benefit:

Wet Wednesday Benefit for Bryant Elementary School and Experience Corp

FREE ADMISSION, Free Food, DJ Paul (spinning soul, funk, reggae, breaks and house) and surf flicks projected on a large screen.

Surfpulse.com will be hosting a surfboard raffle (5’10″ no nose quad bio-foam surfboard from Las Olas Surfboards). There will be other great raffle prizes provided by Timbuk2, Red Vic Movie House, Java Beach cafe, The Pizza Place on Noriega and other cool local businesses.

Sierra Nevada will donate $1 for every pint of their beer sold at the party. A percentage of the bar will be donated and Jeff (the Wet Wednesday bartender) will donate all of his share of the tips.

This benefit will help Bryant Elementary pay its share of the costs to keep the Experience Corp tutoring program at their school. Experience Corps brings adults older than 55 into classrooms across the nation to mentor and tutor children in urban public schools. Bryant Elementary School is an innovative public school in the heart of San Francisco’s Mission District.

Two if by land . . .
Mike will be on land in Half Moon Bay, providing most of the play-by-play of the contest and the awards ceremony. His tweets will start with “HMB”.
Matt will be at AT&T Park, covering the big screen crowd, the beer, and the bratwurst. His tweets will start with “ATT”.

One (big) if by sea . . .
Eric, our photographer, will hopefully finagle his way onto a boat at sea, chronicling the scene up close from the channel (tweeting some color in spare moments and while avoiding the vomit brigade). His tweets will start with “boat”. Either that, or “cliff” ;>)

Despite the legal, business, and personal issues associated with the event, or any middle fingers to surf contests in general, there’s no denying the spectacle and intensity of the event–especially in the conditions expected. Take all the b.s. away and we’re still watching 24 of the best big wave surfers on the planet on arguably the heaviest big wave on the planet with some of the heaviest conditions on day of contest. We wish each of the 24 good luck!

The first heat starts at 8:00 AM. After the first four heats, the semi-finals (2 heats) start at 11:30 AM. The final heat starts at 1:30 PM. Awards ceremony at 3:00 PM.

The next Wet Wednesday at The Riptide (3639 Taraval St. @ 47th Ave.) on Jan. 13 is sponsored by SurfPulse and is a benefit for Teen Art Camps at Sharon Arts Studio in Golden Gate Park.

The Sharon Art Studio is San Francisco’s largest public community art center. Proceeds raised at the benefit will help support low-cost art camps for teens this summer. http://www.sharonartstudio.org.

Buy a raffle ticket, drink some beer, watch surf films (including new OB footage from Doug Schultz), and hear some great tunes. Rumor has it that some of the SurfPulse team and contributors will be there to celebrate the recent relaunch of the website. We hope you can join us!

SurfPulse’s New Look to Debut Soon!

Hello, SurfPulse Community!

As most of you remember, we made some tweaks to the layout of SurfPulse about a year ago. The idea was to “modernize” some of the features of the site and generally make it more fun and useful. We’re always getting feedback and suggestions, so in an effort to improve the site as a resource for the local surfing community, we’re going to release another round of tweaks that we hope you will find to be useful improvements to your experience on SurfPulse.

It’s nothing earth shattering, but the idea is to make the site easier to use. Check out the screen shot below for a sneak peek.

Also, we know that as we update the site, we will have some bugs, and it’s possible that as we make tweaks, some stuff might break. Please be patient with the update. SurfPulse is something we volunteer to do in our spare time outside of our full-time jobs, and we’ll be trying to get to all issues and improvements as soon as we can. If you notice anything that isn’t working properly, and it doesn’t seem to be getting fixed, shoot us an email at surfpulse@surfpulse.com. And if you have any comments or suggestions for the new site, please send those comments to us, too. Much appreciated.

Wet Wednesday at The Riptide 11/25/2009

SurfPulse helps sponsor the last Wet Wednesday of every month at The Riptide (3639 Taraval at 47th Ave.) in SF. Come on down and join us and other sponsors, including Aqua Surf Shop, for a Thanksgiving Eve bender. There will be a benefit for Alemany Farm and a celebration of bartender Jeff’s birthday. The night will feature:

-$5 raffle for a Las Olas Surfboard (a biofoam 7’0” rounded pin single fin) plus prizes from Java Beach Cafe, Timbuk2, Red Vic Movie House, Mocha 101, the Pizza Place on Noriega and Jaimal Yogis, author of Saltwater Buddha.

-Shorts by the Aqua Surf Shop Crew (Silvin Morgan, Brian Musial, Aleks Petrovitch and Merle) including their classic zombie/red neck surf flicks.

-Jeff’s Birthday celebration festivities (anything could happen—2007′s bday brought a parade of Jeff look-alikes to the bar) with DJ Paul spinning soul, funk, dub, breaks, hip hop and reggae.

-Free food -No admission. Sierra Nevada will also donate $1 for every pint of their beer sold and a portion of the bar sales and tips will also be donated.

Alemany Farm grows organic fruit and vegetables for San Francisco’s diverse communities, hosts field trips and organizes educational workshops to get City residents closer to their food.
