Pic makes it look better than it is. Super lumpy out there this morning. Some south swell in the mix, but mostly lumped waist to chest high slop. Things don’t look much better to close out the week as a new NW swell will be the prevailing one and we’re likely to be staring at textured and small conditions for awhile.

How do I get in better surf shape for a summer surf trip?

I sat on the report a little bit this morning because yesterday defied all typical summer patterns, and the wind backed off as the morning progressed, and the surf got better. So I thought I’d check it late in the morning, rather than the crack of dawn, to see if we might be in for a repeat of that. Well, that sure as hell hasn’t happened. Gone are the waist-to-chest high, playful waves, replaced with summer slop. It’s cold, it’s foggy, it’s onshore, it’s small, and the surf sucks. Welcome to summer everyone, enjoy the doldrums!

Small semi-clean lines coming in feathering on the outside and/or tripping on the inside sandbar. The inside is walled for the most part, but it looks like there are some corners to snag. Long period swell is helping it look somewhat organized at times. Tide is full now. Wave shape could improve marginally with the low tide, but it’s likely to be a longboard or fish day.

Sorry for the late report. It was super foggy early, then I decided to get a utility session in once it burned off. Either way, there was a small window there when the fog lifted a bit, the morning sickness subsided, the tide was out, and the wind hadn’t come up yet. That window has probably past now, but there are still a good number of folks paddling around and making the best of it. Can’t blame ‘em, it’s Spring, so passable conditions are few and far between.

It’s a clear morning with clean surface conditions. Waves coming in at the chest to head high range. Still a bit jarbled, perhaps due to some morning sickness, with the inside doubling up and closing out while the outside feathers. We’re heading towards a 9 am low tide so things should get interesting as conditions are looking pretty ideal for a surf.

Bigger, cleaner and grindier than it has been, the beach is still mostly jumbled inside and burgering outside. The mix of swell out there is producing waves in the shoulder to just overhead range, onshore winds remain light and the tide’s on the rise so the inside may start to get interesting. I saw a couple of rights with fun-looking drops so a session now could be more than just the utility session of the last few days, but this time of year, it’s really about what else you’ve got competing for your time. Enjoy it if you go – it’s been sunny and beautiful all morning.

Small, waist to chest high waves coming through this morning. Ridable sets are breaking on the outside, but kind of mushing out. There is some funk to it as we head towards low tide. The incoming push could give it a little more power, as right now its on the weak side. If you’re going, a floaty board is the claim.

The sun has been buried behind the fog for the morning, and there’s a slight hint of onshore winds, but otherwise, it’s starting to feel a bit like Groundhog Day out here…the surf looks almost the exact same that it has for the last few days. Just like the last few mornings, chest-high waves are dumping and closing out on the super shallow inside, and barely breaking on the outside. It’s fairly smooth and looks like there should be waves, but instead it’s a lot waiting and marginal surfing until you maybe pull into that rare gem. Maybe. But sometimes the hunt for the diamond in the rough pays off, so it might still be worth a paddle.

Ridability, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder. The surf is looking a lot like the last few mornings; fairly-clean surface conditions with chest to shoulder high peaks–some of which resemble ridable waves–scattered around the beach. Tide bottomed out early and we are headed to a midday high. Depending on your commitments on this beautiful Monday, a session could be had, but it’s nothing to rush out the door for.
