Half Moon Bay – 06/01/09
First Annual Big Wave Surfing Film Festival
Presented by the Oceano Hotel and Spa, Sams Chowder House and the Old Princeton Landing

From the spirit of Jay Moriarity to women’s surfing to the powerful presence of Greg Noll, surfing fans are in for a treat June 17-20 when the first annual Half Moon Bay Big-Wave Surfing Film Festival takes place at the Oceano Hotel in Princeton Harbor. Just a stone’s throw away from the Big Wave Surfing Mecca known as Maverick’s.

The Bull (Greg Noll), legendary for his pioneering performances in Hawaii, will be present on the red carpet opening Wednesday night for his film, “Search For Surf,” in which he teamed with storied filmmaker Bruce Brown to recall their experiences in California and Hawaii.

“What better way to open an event like this, then to have one of the sports most legendary and inspirational icons on hand…” said Grant Washburn, Mavericks Surfer and Event organizer.

The following night will be a tribute to the late Jay Moriarity, who died on a free-diving expedition off the coast of India in 2001. Moriarity was one of the best surfers ever to ride Maverick’s, and is held close to the hearts of the Maverick’s and Big Wave Community. The featured films that Thursday night will be “Whipped” and “Ride On,” each produced by Eric Nelson and Curt Myers of Powerlines Productions.

“We’re beyond excited to host an event that features Big Wave Surfing, the filmmakers and the surfers themselves”, said Katherine Clark, Event Organizer. “This is just the beginning of what will become a great tradition in the Big-Wave off season.”

Seldom, if ever, have so many highly regarded surf films been on display over such a short time. The event will be held inside the new Harbor Villages shopping center at Princeton, in the shadow of Maverick’s, and visitors are likely to see a number of big-wave superstars in attendance.

In addition to the films, a photo-and-surfboard gallery will be on display throughout the festival at the Oceano Hotel, inside Harbor Village. Photos include some of the best work from Frank Quirarte, Doug Acton, Don Montgomery, Ed Grant, Seth Midgall, and others who have shot Maverick’s over the years.

The complete schedule:

Wednesday, June 17, at ballroom of the Oceano Hotel:

Reception at 6 p.m, followed by 7 p.m. Greg Noll’s “Search for Surf,” with Noll a featured speaker, highlighting the early days of big-wave riding at Waimea Bay, Pipeline, Sunset Beach and Makaha.

8:30 p.m. “The Perfect 10” The story of Big Wave Africa 2008, the shocking event held at Dungeons last July which prompted Surfing Magazine’s Evan Slater to state “this is possibly the biggest paddle-in surf ever photographed”. Highlights include Maverick’s Champions Tazzy, Flea, Greg Long and Twiggy Baker, as well as regulars Matt Ambrose, Grant Washburn and Tyler Smith challenging the South Atlantic beast. Throw them in with international icons like Carlos Burle, Paul Patterson, Jamie Sterling, Ross Clark Jones and Mark Healey, add South Africa’s best surfers and most treacherous waves. Produced by Red Bull South Africa and Fixer Films
Directed by Neil Webster and assisted by Grant Washurn

Point Break LIVE!, the Brechtian blockbuster which garnered a “Seattle P-I Best of Seattle 2004″ award, as well as rave reviews across the nation, tells the story of former college football star Johnny Utah—Keanu Reeves in the film—who goes in pursuit of the surfing, bankrobbing, skydiving, bare-hand-fighting adrenaline-junkie-cum-Zen-master Bodhi Sattva. The show features armed robbery, big-wave surfing, car chases, explosions, and no less than two extended skydiving sequences.

Best of all, the starring role of Keanu will be selected at random from the audience each night, with the lucky winner reading their entire script off of cue-cards. This method manages to capture the rawness of a Keanu Reeves performance even from those who generally think themselves incapable of acting.

SurfPulse hears that this theater experience is a hoot.

Point Break Live! is playing at Cell Space, 2050 Bryant Street (between 18th and 19th Streets). The show opened on March 13 and has an open run.

QUESTION: How can I work toward surfing bigger waves?

Hi Beth, I would like to be able to comfortably surf overhead to double overhead waves. I have been surfing on and off for a couple years now and sometimes feel hesitant paddling out when it’s big and hairy. Do you have any suggestions on improving one’s surfing mindset when the waves are large?

Thanks, Howard

ANSWER:

Hey Howard,

Stoked you are coming to my clinic in March. I have been thinking a bit about your question and have a few things worth considering. Sounds like you live around the SF area and, as you know, larger waves around here are crushing compared to mellow point breaks. SO, fitness is a large part of riding bigger waves. IF you are not surfing 3-4 days/week during the winter months, I would suggest joining a gym and lifting and/or starting a swimming program. The more fit you are, the more you’re able to deal with the currents, the paddle, and the hellish shore break will seem. You also want to be strong enough to take care of yourself if you do get caught in a rip, if your leash or board breaks all the way outside, or if you get worked on the inside.

Next thing to consider before testing the waters in bigger surf is are you putting yourself or others in danger. Can you hold onto your board most of the time? Can you make most of your drops or pull out of a wave quickly so you don’t hit someone paddling out? Things to think of so you and others feel safe.

To get back to your question, for me the best way to get comfortable in bigger surf was to work my way up to it by challenging myself safely. Try to get a buddy who is a better surfer to go out with you and explain what is going on (and to keep an eye on you). I can’t emphasize enough that you need to have a positive experience when going beyond your comfort level so that you don’t scare the crap out of yourself. The next time you go and surf smaller waves, you will feel like a hero and be totally stoked that you are in mellower waves. Hopefully what will happen is that you will slowly work up to bigger waves rather than jumping in way over your head.

I look forward to meeting you at Aquaholics! Hope this helps.

Hasta,

Beth
