The San Francisco Ocean Film Festival (SFOFF) is now accepting entries through December 1, 2010! In its eighth year, SFOFF returns March 9–13, 2011 at Pier 39 to present more than 40 documentary, fictional, narrative and animated films from around the world. The films are intended to not only to entertain but, educate and encourage active participation in ocean conservation. To achieve this goal, programs are followed by in-depth Q&A with filmmakers and subject matter experts, creating a unique public forum on the environmental, social and cultural importance of marine resources. SFOFF 2011 will attract more than 4,500 people to one of the most anticipated and inclusive ocean events of the year. We consider films of any length with the following themes: Ocean Sports, Ocean-related Environmental Issues, Marine Sciences and Wildlife, Ocean Exploration, and Coastal and Island Culture and History. For more information, please visit sfoff.org.

“Shot entirely in 16mm in New Jersey, this film definitely transcends the Garden State borders. The story is one that every surfer, New Jersey surfers more so, can relate to. We’ve all surfed clean waist-to-chest-high surf, and sometimes that surf can be the most fun. But don’t be fooled either, there are your classic Jersey bombs on those freezing winter days as well. Pair that with an incredible soundtrack that seems to make the tale flow even more, and it’s evident that Pahlow’s and Zegel’s hard work has paid off. Do yourself a favor and check out the best surf movie to ever come out of the Garden State. - Ryan Brower – Transworld Surf.

About the Film:

A Pleasant Surprise, lauded by Transworld Surf as “a Must-See Surf Movie for 2010,” offers an honest look at the talents of a select group of surfers who live in a truly special part of the United States –New Jersey. Almost three years in the making, this film documents a world of contrast as daily changes in weather and waves prove to be all part of a larger picture; thumping beach breaks, cold water, and quick tropical storms are just a fraction of what you will find.

Filmed in 16mm, A Pleasant Surprise delivers a good glimpse into the beauty of this region and its surfers. The film is the product and labor of two longtime friends Kyle Pahlow and Nick Zegel. Their story is one that every surfer can relate to.

A Pleasant Surprise features the music of Yeasayer, Moondoggies, The Rubies, Here We Go Magic, The Chicago Underground Quartet, and ORIGINAL music from Brian Parnagian and Las Flores Project!

The Coastside Film Society (and Surfrider San Mateo Chapter) proudly presents a FREE screening of THE COVE (PG-13, 92 minutes).

EVENT DETAILS
DATE: Friday, June 25, 2010
LOCATION: 777 Miramontes St, Half Moon Bay, CA
TIME: 8:00PM – 9:30PM

“The Cove plays like the James Bond version of an environmental documentary. Quite simply one of the year’s best movies.” Peter Howell, Toronto Star

A documentary about a group of environmental activists attempting to expose the dark underside of the annual dolphin roundup in Japan. Tourists flock to Taiji, the little town that hosts the roundup, to see where so many of the world’s performing dolphins come from. What they are not told is that the vast majority of corralled dolphins end up as mercury-laden “whale meat” in Japanese school lunches.

The Japanese government and leaders of Taiji did everything they could to keep the story of the Cove of hidden. The filmmakers responded with over-the-barbed-wire daring do, utilizing disguises and state-of-the-art spy techniques to get the footage they wanted.

Be warned “some of the footage is graphic and bloody, but the Cove also “makes points that don’t depend on those shots for their effectiveness. We learn a lot about dolphin intelligence, witness the ineffectiveness of the International Whaling Commission in the face of Japanese lobbying, and learn how the high mercury levels in dolphin meat bring to mind the earlier mercury poisoning scandal at Minamata.” Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times

On the heels of the recent The Surfer’s Journal article on Michael Peterson (excellent piece, btw), the new documentary, “Searching for Michael Peterson” is showing ONE TIME ONLY in San Francisco on Wed., Oct. 7 at 8:00 PM at the Victoria Theater (16th St./Mission St.). The film is also playing in Santa Cruz on Thurs., Oct. 8 at the Vets Building.

“Searching for Michael Peterson,” directed by Jolyon Hoff, is a documentary telling the moving story of one of Australia’s greatest surfers whose career was cut short by mental illness. For five glorious years “MP” led the Coolangatta Kids and won virtually every event he contested, including three Bells Beach Pros back to back. His brilliant, aggressive surfing provided the centrepiece for Albert Falzon’s “Morning of the Earth” in 1972, and MP never looked back. His final tour victory, at the inaugural Stubbies Pro at Burleigh Heads in 1977, is regarded as the high point of the early professional era. Sadly, a year later triumph turned to tragedy and Michael’s demons claimed him.

In 1983 he was locked up after a 15-car police chase across Queensland and finally diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia. He never surfed again.

Thirty years on, MP is still vitally interested in the sport and culture of surfing and is a fixture at most Queensland events, enjoying the action with his mother, Joan. He is rightly regarded as an iconic figure in Australian surfing, and Hoff’s film, while it pulls no punches, is an intensely moving tribute to the man.

This film has just toured Australia, where it sold out rapidly and was enthusiastically recieved by it’s audience.
