As part of the Firehouse Film Series, The Surfrider Foundation is showing the documentary film “Slow the Flow” at the Pedro Point Firehouse (1227 Danmann Ave., Pedro Point) in Pacifica on Sun., 1/23 at 2:00PM. The event is FREE.

SLOW THE FLOW is a film by local surfer and award-winning filmmaker Elizabeth Pepin Silva on the damaging effects of storm water runoff and the practices that individuals and communities have created to steward our watersheds and slow down the flow of storm water, such as SF Surfrider’s Ocean Friendly Gardens and Plant Don’t Pave programs.

Co-Sponsored by the San Francisco Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation and the Pedro Point Community Association, this event will also offer resources on native planting and best design practices for ocean-friendly gardens.

Free Screening of “The Cove” in HMB on Friday, June 25, 2010

A documentary about a group of environmental activists attempting to expose the dark underside of the annual dolphin roundup in Japan. Tourists flock to Taiji, the little town that hosts the roundup, to see where so many of the world’s performing dolphins come from. What they are not told is that the vast majority of corralled dolphins end up as mercury-laden “whale meat” in Japanese school lunches.

The Japanese government and leaders of Taiji did everything they could to keep the story of the Cove of hidden. The filmmakers responded with over-the-barbed-wire daring do, utilizing disguises and state-of-the-art spy techniques to get the footage they wanted.

Be warned “some of the footage is graphic and bloody, but the Cove also “makes points that don’t depend on those shots for their effectiveness. We learn a lot about dolphin intelligence, witness the ineffectiveness of the International Whaling Commission in the face of Japanese lobbying, and learn how the high mercury levels in dolphin meat bring to mind the earlier mercury poisoning scandal at Minamata.” Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times

On Wed., May 23rd at 7:30 P. M., Aqua Surf Shop and Wavefest present a screening and discussion of surf explorer Timmy Turner’s documentary film The Tsunami Diaries.

Renowned surf explorer Timmy Turner and his friendsrespond to the devastation of the 2004 Tsunami bylaunching a spontaneous relief effort to help thevillagers of the outermost islands of Indonesia. Adiverse group comes together with the common goal ofaiding others. This is a frontline documentary oftheir valiant and courageous efforts, and a testimonyto the universal spirit of people helping one another.

This is not a surf movie, this is a movie aboutsurfers giving back. Timmy will lead a discussion andanswer your questions giving you the ultimate insider’sperspective on how the Tsunami affected Indonesia, andhow we can all use our individual talents to helpothers through such times.

Woody Brown Documentary in Half Moon Bay on Friday, March 9, 2007

The Coastside Film Society is screening the documentary film Of Wind and Waves: The Life of Woody Brown on Fri., March 9th in Half Moon Bay. The documentary is an award-winning look at the 95-year old legend, Woody Brown, who has put his stamp on the worlds of surfing, sailing, and soaring. The film explores Woody Brown’s life both in his own words and from the perspectives of his family, friends and other surfing legends and collegues. The film also features a remarkable archive of film and photography from every stage of Woody’s long life.

Woody Brown Documentary in SF and San Rafael through December 7, 2006

Of Wind and Waves: The Life of Woody Brown will be playing at the Red Vic Movie House in San Francisco’s Upper Haight district through December 3, and then showing at San Rafael’s Smith Rafael Film Center from December 5 through 7. The filmmaker, David Brown, will be present at all screenings to answer questions. This film is an award-winning look at the remarkable 94-year old legend in the worlds of surfing, sailing and soaring. A Maui resident, Woody has lived a life of remarkable adventure and accomplishment, including inventing the modern catamaran, setting world gliding records, and surfing Hawaii’s 25-foot surf in the 1940′s. He has also lived with a kind of selflessness and generosity that have made him an inspiring role model for generations of Hawaiians. The fantastic Bay Area Hula Troupe will be performing before all Smith Rafael Film Center screening, and Jeffrey Sellon, Woody’s son, will be attending on Thurs., 12/7. World Premiere of Sarah Gerhardt Film, One Winter Story, in Mill Valley on October 8 and 9, 2006

The Mill Valley Film Festival is showcasing the world premiere of the film One Winter Story, documenting the life of Sarah Gerhardt, the first woman to brave the waves at Maverick’s.

There will be two screenings of the film:

Sunday, Oct. 8th, 4:15pm, CineArts @ Sequoia Theater, downtown Mill Valley
Monday, Oct. 9th, 6:45pm, 142 Throckmorton Theatre, downtown Mill Valley

Sarah Gerhardt will be at the Sun., Oct. 8th screening, and directors Sally Lundburg and Elizabeth Pepin will appear at both screenings to answer questions.

New Woody Brown Documentary Sneak Preview in Pacifica on Saturday, July 29, 2006

Of Wind and Waves: The Life of Woody Brown, an award-winning hour-long documentary on a 94-year old legend in the worlds of surfing, sailing and soaring, will receive a Pacifica Sneak Preview screening at the Log Shop, 640 Crespi Dr., in Pacifica at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 29, 2006. A donation of $5-$10 sliding scale will be requested at the door and the proceeds will benefit next year’s Kahuna Kupuna Surf Contest organized by Pacifica surfer/gerontologist/social worker, Roy Earnest.

Maui resident, Woody Brown, has not only lived a life full of remarkable adventure and accomplishment—including inventing the modern catamaran, setting world gliding records, and surfing Hawai’i's 25-foot surf in the early 1940s—but he has also done so with a kind of selflessness and generosity that have made him a role model for three generations of Hawaiians. Of Wind and Waves is produced and directed by San Francisco filmmaker, David L. Brown, who directed the award-winning Surfing for Life (Best Documentary and Audience Award, Hawaii International Film Festival) that featured Woody. Filmmaker Brown will be present at the sneak preview screening to answer questions.
