The following shark encounter report is courtesy of the Shark Research Committee.

On May 9, 2010, Brian Monroe was surfing Ocean Beach, San Francisco. It was about 5:00 PM under a breezy, partly cloudy sky. Air and water temperatures were estimated at 60 and 55 degrees Fahrenheit, respectively. Monroe reported the following:

“I was surfing in about 1–3 surf in choppy conditions about 50–60 yards from shore. It was low tide. I saw this event start about 50–75 yards away laterally down the beach to the north of my location. I saw a large dark grey dorsal fin, 18–24 inches high, and splashing directly next to a Grey Whale ( Eschrichtius robustus) that had its back elevated out of the water. I quickly paddled to shore and observed what appeared to be two whales, one large and one small, being repeatedly pursued by a large dark grey dorsal fin traveling along the surface. The shark appeared to be acting in an aggressive manner. About 5–7 minutes after the initial sighting, I observed a pod of three Dolphins in the immediate area with smaller 6–10 inch dorsal fins. After about 10 minutes I no longer observed the large dorsal fin, but continued to see the whale(s) moving along the coast northern direction, blowing air out their blow holes. Whether this was an attack on the whale calf or there was a school of fish that they were all going after I don’t know, but this was witnessed by multiple people in the area.”

Please report any shark sighting, encounter, or attack to the Shark Research Committee.

The much anticipated swell has arrived with very large and in-charge conditions out here. There is some fog off in the distance obscuring the outer shoals a bit, however there are breaking waves as far out as I can see. The weather is beautiful with a slight breeze out of the east and sunny mild conditions. However, as far as surfing OB goes this morning, forget about it. The swell is just too raw with triple overhead plus waves with not a rideable wave in sight. The good news is there is ample swell in the water, thus I’m sure you can find something working somewhere. Enjoy the day.

The surf looks to be in the slightly to 1.5X’s overhead range and building as we speak. The inside is doing what the inside does best of creating lots of turning foam and water with the outer bar fairing better with mostly sectioned, walled up waves with an occasional shoulder moving through. Overall, conditions are looking rather bleak out there with a stiff breeze blowing over a building, shifting fairly unorganized swell at the moment.

Conditions are looking clean out there, however the surf seems to be lacking much drive or desire to make its way towards shore with mostly sectioned, soft waves scattered about. Every so often a little shoulder moves through, thus if you’re up for it you could definitely make a go of it. Overall, conditions are looking fairly weak out there, but rideable in a floaty board, desperate sort of way.

On tap this morning we have a steady breeze out of the west creating a good amount of chop and funk to the ocean. The waves seem to be in the head high to slightly overhead range doing the warbled, crumbling summertime thing. To put it mildly, conditions are looking rather non inspirational out there with shifting, crumbling, sectioned, walled up conditions with maybe a sporadic shoulder moving through from time to time. The only good news with this morning is the paddle is looking rather mild, so if you do decide to go for a paddle, you might be able to keep the number of duck dives in the double digit range. Enjoy the day.

On tap this morning we have ominous looking skies, the air is still with waves in the slightly to double overhead range sloshing away. Conditions are looking rather bleak out there with a storm brewed ocean and sectioned, sloppy waves with not much of anything out there worthy of a paddle. The inside is doing its thing of producing lots of turning water and foam with the outside fairing a tad better, but definitely more of the same. Overall, conditions are not shaping up for a surf morning with only a storm haggard ocean being served up at the moment.

Monday morning brings us a stiff breeze out of the west blowing over a rough ocean with waves in the slightly to occasional double overhead range. The wind is doing an excellent job at knocking down the surf and creating a good amount of chop out there. For the most part the waves are doing the sectioned, walled up thing with maybe an occasional something or other moving through that resembles a shoulder. Overall, it’s a cold, windy February morning with blah, wind torn conditions happening out here. The only real good news about this morning is I was able to encompass the famous Snowy Plovers in the picture for your enjoyment.

Superbowl Sunday brings us a stiff, cold breeze out of the west blowing over a storm brewed ocean with waves in the 1.5X’s to double overhead plus range crumbling away off in the distance. The inside bar is just tons of turning water with the outside fairing a touch better with the occasional shoulder making appearance here and there. Overall, the onshore breeze is stiff and cold creating havoc out on the water with the reward vs. punishment ratio heavily skewed towards punishment.

This fine Saturday morning brings us a stiff breeze blowing out of the west, cloudy ominous looking skies with storm brewed surf in the 1.5 to double overhead range sloshing about. Unfortunately, conditions are looking fairly horrible out there with knocked down, sectioned, shifting waves breaking anywhere and any way with not a rideable wave in sight. The good news is there is definitely some energy in the water, thus something has to be working somewhere, just that somewhere is unfortunately not here.
