Jeff Clark Sues Maverick’s Contest on Wednesday, January 20, 2010

Jeff Clark has filed a suit against MSV, organizers of the Maverick’s Surf Contest, for breach of contract. Read more on ESPN, but this quote kinda sums it up:

“I’ve waited patiently and remained quiet in an effort to settle our issues in private, without casting a shadow over the contest that I founded. But it’s obvious MSV has no intention of working this out. They have forced me to file suit in order to move on with my life,” Clark said.

Beach Cleanup in HMB on Saturday, May 30, 2009

Join the San Mateo County Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation and the LIVE 105 Action Team for another beach cleanup on Sat., May 30 from 12:00–2:00 PM at Surfer’s Beach (aka “The Jetty”) in Half Moon Bay.

We’ll provide gloves and bags (but if you want to bring your own, go for it!), plus there’ll be free CDs from Kings of Leon and Pearl Jam and tickets to see the All American Rejects at Konocti Harbor from LIVE 105 (while supplies last) for whoever finds the most interesting piece of garbage!

Sign in at the Surfrider table in the parking lot just south of the RV lot by the jetty. Due to limited parking, you may have to park in the dirt lot across the highway, but be careful when crossing Highway 1—we don’t want to have to pick up YOUR roadkill remains as part of our cleanup!

Thanks for cleaning up our beaches and remember…no trash, no rash!

The Surfrider San Mateo chapter holds its next public meeting on Thurs., March 19 at 7:00 PM. The meeting will be held at Point Montara Light Station in Montara.

Meeting Update, topic to be rescheduled:
Keith Mangold, “Corral De Tierra: A Tour of Coastside Geology, History and Ecology.”
Keith Mangold will not be able to speak on Thursday due to a family emergency. We will ask Keith to speak at a future date. Our condolences are with Keith during this sad time.

Our meeting will still be held. Please join us for a presentation by Save The Waves Coalition: “World Surfing Reserves Program.”

World Surfing Reserves Program
presented by João De Macedo of Save the Waves
The World Surfing Reserves program is an initiative designed to enshrine and protect the world’s best surf spots. The program mission is to proactively designate and help preserve outstanding waves, surf zones and their surrounding environments, around the world. The goal is to designate and protect a unique part of the coastal environment recognized by the local community, local surf organizations, regional and national authorities, Save The Waves Coalition and its partners.

João De Macedo is an accomplished professional Portuguese surfer, competing around the world in the Pipeline contests and on the European Professional Surfing Circuit. João founded the Lisbon based surf school Praia Grande Surf Academia and worked as the Portuguese National Coach in 2002 and 2004. João lives in San Francisco and when not assisting Save The Waves, he works as the eco-manager for Mavericks Surf Ventures, Inc., which is the organization behind the Mavericks Surf Contest.

Surfrider SMC will also share our 2009 campaign objectives and ask for your volunteer involvement.

Directions to Montara Lighthouse:
25 miles south of San Francisco and 7 miles north of Half Moon Bay. The lighthouse is on Highway 1 near 16th Street, between the towns of Montara and Moss Beach.

Northbound on Highway 1, you are advised to continue past the lighthouse entrance (on your left), into the town of Montara, then turn around so you can enter the lighthouse driveway with a southbound right turn at the end of the guardrail.

Park in upper parking lot, alongside Highway 1, only please!

The Surfrider San Mateo Chapter holds its next public General Meeting on Thurs., Dec. 11. The meeting will be held at the Pedro Point Fire House and starts at 7:00 PM.

The topic of the meeting will be “Change at Ocean Beach.” hosted by big wave surfer and local legend Dr. Mark Renneker.

Featured Guest Speaker: Marine biologist Bob Breen, representative to the North Central Coast Regional Stakeholder Group of the Marine Life Protection Act Initiative

Meet other like-minded ocean enthusiasts and learn more about the Marine Life Protection Act (MLPA) Initiative, now in it’s second phase and charged to develop a suite of networks of marine protected areas (MPAs) as well as a regional evaluation of the existing ones.

Local marine biologist Bob Breen, a member of the multi-interest North Central Coast Regional Stakeholder Group appointed by the California Department of Fish and Game to assist in the second phase, will be there with the latest news and some insight into one of the hottest topics in the protection of our coast and ocean.

There is no cost to attend the meeting though donations will be accepted to help benefit the San Mateo County Chapter’s Blue Water Task Force water quality monitoring program and the Watershed Discovery Workshop series.

Watershed Discovery Workshop is a classroom/field trip program for students to visit our lab, the coast, and places within the local watersheds. Students tour each site and perform science experiments geared to help make learning easier and more effective in the classroom. Sound good? We’ll also be talking about the cleanup we did for California Coastal Cleanup Day at Tunitas, where we hauled over a quarter ton (630 lbs!) of trash and recycleables up adventure cliff off of the beach. Ginourmous THANKS to all the volunteers, the City of Half Moon Bay, Sarah Pratt at San Mateo County, and to Junk General for sponsoring the biodiesel powered pick up!!

That, other updates, and again we want to acknowledge Roy Earnest and Kahuna Kupuna for the generous donation and support!

Keep in mind the format for the evening is conversation over dinner, so bring questions and friends! If you can think of anyone who might want to be there just let them know, and if you have questions just ask or visit the website!

The Surfrider San Mateo Chapter is holding a Chapter Focus General Meeting on Mon., July 16th at 7:00 P. M. The meeting will be held at Waterfront Pizza, 969 Edgewater Blvd., Foster City.

This is a chance for members to get together family style and discuss the chapter and its activities and programs, campaigns and overall objectives, and how the chapter can go about doing what it takes to be successful. Please bring some new ideas and insights that will help the chapter move forward better.
