Ocean Beach Master Plan Workshop #3 in San Francisco on Saturday, October 29, 2011

On Sat., Oct. 29 from 10:00–12:30, come on down to the Golden Gate Park Senior Center (6101 Fulton St. at 27th Ave.) for the third workshop regarding the erosion problem at Sloat.

Surfrider is urging a managed retreat solution to the erosion problem at Sloat. Our vision involves a landward relocation of vulnerable infrastructure, rubble/rock removal and full beach restoration. We advocate the construction of a sand dune barrier to act as a protective device for the wastewater plant and other remaining structures.

This is the last public workshop for the public to comment on a long term plan to address Sloat erosion and other beach management issues. Please show up and support a managed retreat solution.

Photo Call for Surfrider Marin 2012 Calendar

This is a call for photos for next year’s 2012 Marin Surf Calendar. Do you have a great digital photo of Marin’s beautiful surf, coastline or landscape to donate to Surfrider’s calendar? We would love to include it. Please email it (in jpg format) to Loren Moore at lorenlmoore +AT+ yahoo +DOT+ com.

The 2011 calendar was a great success and we hope to produce an even better one for 2012. Last year’s calendar had thirteen photographs (twelve months and the cover) from six photographers. This year we’re hoping to receive photos from ten or more photographers. A committee of experts will select the best ones.

Surfrider Marin Chapter Meeting on Wednesday, August 10, 2011

The monthly meeting of Surfrider Foundation Marin County is Wednesday August 10 at 7:00 PM. We meet at the THE WIPEOUT BAR & GRILL in the Bon Air Shopping Center in Greenbrae (415-461-7400). Wednesdays are $5 a pizza night at the Wipeout. Join us and have a bite of pizza with your Surfrider friends.

SF Surfrider Creating New Ocean Friendly Garden

SF Surfrider is sponsoring the adoption of a piece of land on El Camino Del Mar near Lands End in order to turn it into a thriving, brilliant, Ocean Friendly Garden. We would love for you to join us for a little weeding, planting and mulching! Please spread the word!

When: Saturday, July 30th; 10 am – ?? (any time you contribute will be
very helpful!)
Where: El Camino Del Mar at Seal Rock Drive (close to the entrance to
Fort Miley)
What: good times, working outside with plants and soil

If anyone has a truck and could help pick up mulch, plants, etc.,
please send me an email. We could also use donations of stones,
pathway materials, etc. There’s a lot of room for creativity here.

Some tools/gloves will be provided, but bring a shovel, rake, etc. of
your own if you have one to share.

International Surfing Day Events on Monday, June 20, 2011

International Surfing Day is on Monday, June 20!

Here are some local events:

ISD Team Challenge Surfing Contest sponsored by Surfrider San Mateo County
Mobile location: Linda Mar or Montara or Dunes
6 TEAMS 4 SURFERS 1 HOUR… 0 ENTRY FEE

To celebrate International Surfing Day (ISD), the Surfrider Foundation in San Mateo County will be hosting a team surfing competition.

HOW IT WORKS
At the start of the 1 hour heat, each of the six teams send out one competitor. Once a competitor catches a wave they must come in and switch out with the next member of his team. This process continues throughout the duration of the heat. There is no time limit per competitor and they may wait as long as they like for the right wave.

SCORING
Your team score is the combination of each team member’s top scoring wave during the heat.

WHO CAN BE ON MY TEAM
All ages, genders and skill levels are welcome on each 4 person team.

International Surfing Day at Baker Beach in San Francisco, sponsored by Surfrider San Francisco Chapter:

Come join us for INTERNATIONAL SURFING DAY at Baker Beach! We have a whole host of things lined up for the day. We’ll have a beach clean-up from 4-6pm followed by a BBQ with free food and drinks! Beach Cleanups at Montara State Beach on Sunday, June 19 and Mussel Rock Park on Monday, June 20, 2011

The Surfrider San Mateo chapter sponsors two beach cleanups in the next couple of days.

Beach Cleanup #1: Montara State Beach on Sun., June 19 from 9:00AM to noon

Beach Cleanup #2: Mussel Rock Park at 120 Westline Drive in Daly City on Mon., June 20 from 10:00AM to noon

WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING?
We will provide all supplies, but volunteers are always welcome to bring their own work gloves, trash bag/bucket, and/or reusable water bottle.

WHAT SHOULD I WEAR?
Please wear comfortable clothes, closed toed shoes and sunscreen.

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?
Anyone and everyone. All volunteers will need to sign a liability waiver and volunteers under 18 must have a parent or guardian present at the beginning of the cleanup to sign a liability waiver before the minor can participate.

Surfrider Marin Spring Art Show in Sausalito from Friday, April 29 through Sunday, May 1, 2011

Surfrider Marin has reserved the professional art gallery Studio 333 (333 Caledonia St, Sausalito) to hold the first annual Surfrider Foundation Spring Art Show featuring local artists who specialize in surf, marine or Marin coastal art. Artists on board are: Michael Knowlton, Jim Ellis, Jon Francis, Mary Wagstaff, Tess Greene, Dino Colombo, Nick Allen, John Bucklin and Tom Fleming. The event is a fundraiser for Surfrider, a small donation requested at the door. Our hope is to encourage the arts that the incredible coastal scenery of Marin has inspired. Opening night festivities will include door drawings, music and good cheer. You will not want to miss this one.
