Save The Waves Coalition presents Save The Waves Film Festival, an evening of inspiring environmental films and epic surf films, live music, an art exhibit and a party to benefit the ocean. Featuring Captain Paul Watson of Sea Shepherd Conservation Society presenting a talk about The Cove film and the Northern California premiere of Lost Prophets surf film.

Captain Paul Watson is the preeminent voice for our oceans and the worlds leading environmental activist. This film festival event is one night only, at 7pm on November 13 at the Victoria Theatre in San Francisco. With live music by The Eldorados and Jethro Jeremiah and an art exhibit by Travis Weller. Doors open at 7pm and films screen at 8pm sharp. Please arrive early for choice of seats.

“Searching for Michael Peterson” Surf Film in San Francisco on Wednesday, October 7, 2009

On the heels of the recent The Surfer’s Journal article on Michael Peterson (excellent piece, btw), the new documentary, “Searching for Michael Peterson” is showing ONE TIME ONLY in San Francisco on Wed., Oct. 7 at 8:00 PM at the Victoria Theater (16th St./Mission St.). The film is also playing in Santa Cruz on Thurs., Oct. 8 at the Vets Building.

“Searching for Michael Peterson,” directed by Jolyon Hoff, is a documentary telling the moving story of one of Australia’s greatest surfers whose career was cut short by mental illness. For five glorious years “MP” led the Coolangatta Kids and won virtually every event he contested, including three Bells Beach Pros back to back. His brilliant, aggressive surfing provided the centrepiece for Albert Falzon’s “Morning of the Earth” in 1972, and MP never looked back. His final tour victory, at the inaugural Stubbies Pro at Burleigh Heads in 1977, is regarded as the high point of the early professional era. Sadly, a year later triumph turned to tragedy and Michael’s demons claimed him.

In 1983 he was locked up after a 15-car police chase across Queensland and finally diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia. He never surfed again.

Thirty years on, MP is still vitally interested in the sport and culture of surfing and is a fixture at most Queensland events, enjoying the action with his mother, Joan. He is rightly regarded as an iconic figure in Australian surfing, and Hoff’s film, while it pulls no punches, is an intensely moving tribute to the man.

This film has just toured Australia, where it sold out rapidly and was enthusiastically recieved by it’s audience.

Aqua Surf Shop and Wavefest present the Brain Eating Surf Movie Night at the Victoria Theater in San Francisco’s Mission District on Fri., Oct. 26th.

This scary night features a costume contest and the “triumphant” sequel from filmmaker Brian Conley, My Eyes Won’t Dry.

Surf Film One California Day in San Francisco from October 4 to 7, 2007

Join Mollusk Surf Shop and friends for the film debut of One California Day, a film by Mark Jeremias and Jason Baffa. One California Day is a visual journey through six distinct coastal regions, capturing the California surfing experience through the surfers who live it. Shot in brilliant super 16mm color film, the movie examines the variety of subtle differences that make California so unique.

The film stars the Malloy Brothers, Tom Curren, Dane Perlee, Devin Howard, Tyler Hatzikian, Jimmy Gamboa, Joe Curren, Joel Tudor, Lance Carson, Jed Noll, Greg Noll, Alex Knost, Jeff Johnson and Mitch Abshire.

Opening night screening on Thurs., Oct. 4th starts at 8:00 P.M.
